The Product
otulinum Toxin Type ‘A’ is a highly purified protein, which when injected in very small doses, relaxes muscle tissue.
BOTOX® is Allergen’s brand name for Botulinum Toxin, it is not the name of the treatment but is used because of media hype (such as the word ‘hoovering’ is used when you are actually vacuuming and quite often using a ‘Dyson or Electrolux’ machine rather than a Hoover). Other makes of Botulinum Toxin are: Azzalure, Vistabel, Dysport and Xeomin.
The Treatment
Botulinum Toxin is used for relaxing hyperactive muscles – usually in the upper third of the face:
- * Glabeller (frown lines between the eyes)
- * Forehead (lifting the brow)
- * Crowsfeet (squint lines around the eyes)
- * Hyperhidrosis-to control excessive underarm sweating.
Small amounts of the toxin are injected in the target muscles putting them into ‘hibernation’ for between four to six months.The results are seen between 2-14 days after treatment. A review of the treatment is usually done after 2 weeks, at which time any adjustments can then be made by giving a ‘top up’. The results last approximately between four to six months initially, expanding to 6 months after the initial 2-3 treatments. As we are all individuals, these time scales should be taken as an average.

- * Wrinkles on the forehead can give the face an older, more haggard appearance. As people age, the muscles used to form facial expressions create permanent creases in the skin. One of the benefits of BOTOX® injections is that they can be used to relax the facial muscles, resulting in smoother skin and fewer wrinkles. In areas such as the forehead, where horizontal wrinkles tend to form, the BOTOX® benefits are particularly valuable. Contrary to the common misconception that a doctor must treat each wrinkle, only the underlying muscles that cause wrinkles must be treated. Once you have received your BOTOX® treatment, the muscles that ordinarily cause wrinkles and lines to appear in the forehead are no longer as active for a period of several months.

Contra indications

- * Anti-biotic therapy- Animoglycoside anti-biotics: Gentamycin, Kanamycin, Neomycin, Streptomycin
Things that can go wrong? Not a lot!
- * Some localized, slight bruising could occur, but this is easily disguised with a light application of makeup.
- * Redness at the site of injection (usually goes within a couple of hours)
- * Eyebrow drop (usually wears off after a couple of weeks), should not happen if injected correctly.
- If you are not entirely happy with the results of the treatment, please be assured that the effects will wear off within 4 months.

Azzalure Anti-Wrinkle Treatment (Botulinum Toxin)
The ‘botox’ procedure is one of the safest available for the reduction or softening of wrinkles. ‘Botox ‘ type products are used to treat frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead wrinkles, and lines around the eyes (Crow’s Feet).
Azzalure can also be used to treat lines around the mouth and those on the neck. A few tiny injections are administered to the skin which calm the muscles and thus, allows for a smoother, more relaxed appearance. The effect may take three to five days to appear.
The overall advantages of treating wrinkles with Azzalure
- * Reduces or eliminates wrinkles without surgery.
- * Corrects underlying muscles (as opposed to the skin’s surface as peels do)
- * Provides dramatic effects which are customizable and reversible.
- * No sedation or anesthesia is needed, however, you may choose to have the area numbed with an anesthetic cream or a cold pack prior to injecting.
- * Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Most patients compare the sensation to a pin prick and treatment takes only a few minutes.
How does Azzalure work?
First, a few drops of Azzalure are injected (with a tiny needle) into the muscle that creates the wrinkle. When Azzalure is injected into a muscle, it blocks the nerve impulse from reaching that area, and as a result, the muscle weakens. As the muscle weakens, the skin overlying the muscle relaxes and the wrinkles in the skin gradually soften and often disappear. If a specific muscle can’t move, it can’t cause a wrinkle. Botox treatment does not affect normal facial expressions.

Are there any side effects?
Side effects of Azzalure are minimal, with slight discomfort upon injection of the solution. This may be minimized by the use of Emla cream (topical anaesthetic cream) one hour prior to the injection. Bruising at the sight of injection may occur but is not common.
One percent of patients develop a slight lowering or ptosis of one eyelid and, also rarely, asymmetry of facial expression. These effects are temporary and may not even be noticed by the patient. You may resume normal activity immediately. You may see a marked improvement in the moderate to severe frown lines between your brows within days. Improvement may continue for as long as a month, and could last up to 5 months. After that, the muscle action returns. When frown lines reappear, a repeat treatment is necessary to regain the results.
‘Botox’ type products have been safely and successfully used in wrinkle therapy for almost 10 years. It has been approved by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration) for neurological disorders. In the amounts used for wrinkle therapy, the only possible side effects are temporary and localized to the area of injection.
